A group called Idaho for Wildlife commenced a Two Day Coyote & Wolf Derby today. The derby costs two dollars per person, and offers $1,000 prizes for the team that kills the most amount of wolfs and coyotes.

A federal judge ruled in favor of the group and against WildEarth Guardians and other environmental groups to allow the derby to proceed.

Rewards include $10 and $20 pots for the largest male and female coyotes, and the most female coyotes. There are also youth prizes for adolescent hunters. Kids starting at the age of 10 are allowed to participate in the contest.

The leaders of the kill fest have received death threats, and the contest is against both Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management regulations, but both the state and the organizers are not only allowing it to proceed, but have expedited the permit.

The hunt lists its sponsors on the flyer, along with phone numbers for each sponsor.

Earth First! supports hunt sabotage (see the sabotage manual here) and direct action in defense of the animals against this kind of ecocidal and malevolent behavior.

There’s also a petition you can sign here, which has already gathered more than 16,000 signatures.
